Transgender Awareness

I have compiled here various forms of information, education and resources for all to utilize as a tool to further and maintain our awareness of God’s Transgender People. I recognize that this particular piece of learning, specifically at this time is not happening in a collective space. I assure you the opportunity for those who would choose to gather and enhance this learning will come in the near future. Because we are not together at this time I have asked Mallory to contribute a prayer for all as you embark on this Journey:

Queer and Queering God, we ask Your guidance as we stand at the precipice of this week dedicated to our trans siblings. We pray You will upend what we think we know about how you have ordered creation. May we celebrate the complexity, diversity, and beauty of Your handiwork. Surprise us into teachable humility and grant us the courage to grow. Align our awareness with Your Vision for a just world, where all are free and honored as bearers of Your image. Give us compassionate eyes that refuse to look away from the violence of transphobia and stalwart hearts that stand in solidarity with all those You have called beloved. We pray these things in the subversive wisdom of the Spirit. Amen.

Transgender people come from all walks of life, and Human Rights Campaign Foundation has estimated that there are more than 2 million of us across the United States. We are parents, siblings, and kids. We are your coworkers, your neighbors, and your friends. We are 7-year-old children and 70-year-old grandparents. We are a diverse community, representing all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as all faith traditions.

Sadly, 2020 has already seen at least 34 transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means, the majority of which were Black and Latinx transgender women. We say at least because too often these stories go unreported — or misreported.
